Vocal Compositions
in German Organ Tablatures:
1550-1650

 Dr. Cleveland Johnson
DePauw University

This database includes the contents of 47 manuscript tablatures -- at present, 6585 records.  The main criteria for inclusion in this study are that the source be written in "new" German tablature notation and that it consist substantially of intabulated vocal works. Two printed tablatures are also included in this catalogue since, having been published after 1600, they are not included with the seven earlier prints in Howard Brown's, Instrumental Music Printed Before 1600: A Bibliography.

The majority of the catalog has been compiled using microfilm copies, consulting the source libraries when significant ambiguities surfaced.  Additional manuscript sources continue to appear such that future enlargement of the database (containing at least five MS sources, including three additional tablatures in Levoča and two in Wrocław) will be necessary.  Information about omitted sources or other inaccuracies should be directed to the compiler and administrator of this database, Dr. Cleveland Johnson.

The database can be searched using any one- or a combination of the eighteen available fields of information.  First-time users may wish to try a simple title search, using a common motet title like "Cantate Domino," to see the type of information available.
